This is one of those rare books that hits that literary mark while still being highly entertaining and kid friendly. It's an easy sell (it's about a robot stuck on an island!) but has an awful lot of heart. Peter Brown's illustrations are amazing, and his writing simple and to the point. A quick read, but one that will leave you thinking (and hoping for a sequel).

After a shipment of robots crashes ashore an island, the one surviving robot awakens. At first, all the animals on the island are afraid of Roz, calling her a monster, but after she rescues a goose egg and finds herself the mother of a gosling, the other animals begin to help her out.
This was a heartwarming little story with a great audio production. Roz starts out as an underdog, feared by the animals even though she's trying to help them and learns their languages. Once Brightbill imprints on ...more

Words can't express my love for any book that references Karel Capek! Roz' growing awareness and personality was so wonderful and felt plausible (as plausible as any robot learning animal language can be). And that ending? Sigh. If only this had had the final artwork, I'm sure it would have been a five star!

Peter Brown is one wild an crazy guy and I adore him for it. He visited my school to promote Mr. Tiger Goes Wild and his presentation was endearing. His passion for story telling was obvious. Mr. Tiger served as a great prelude to The Wild Robot.

Honestly this book was creative but boring. Lots of my 4th and 5th graders liked it so I tried it. I actually listened to the audiobook which at least added voices. Oh well. I guess I'll have to read the next one though... But it was so boring that I sort of don't even care to find out what happens (which is not normal for me).

I read this because my daughter is reading it to my grandkids and she thought I would like it, and I did!
I don't read much YA or kid lit, so I don't know how to rate this in comparison to the other stuff in this genre out there.
For me, I made it my bedtime book. I found it simple and lovely and soothing. I loved how the animals came to love and befriend the Robot, Roz. The ending was filled with drama and suspense but it resolved in a way that felt appropriate: sad, but hopeful. I think a lot o ...more
