I adore this book, but it's not one I remember to press on my kids, or recommend to other kids, and I really, really should! I had forgotten about the lunch box alarm, and Bandit . . . so much! Which is funny, because it's a short book! In fact, the audiobook is just 2 hours long. And narrated by Pedro Pascal! Which one of my kids just pointed out to me, and so yesterday afternoon I listened to it, and was charmed all over again by Leigh, and his letters to his favorite author, and his own effor

I remember this book from third or fourth grade, especially the first letter Lee sends to Mr. Henshaw where he spells "liked" as "licked." Even then people with poor spelling skills made me laugh.

I could never keep this book on the shelf at school. Kids recommended it to each other all the time. It was also one of the "Battle of the Books" selections, one of the few that ALL the participants read. I think they connected with Leigh and the idea of using writing as a way to connect with others and learn about ourselves. Or maybe that's just me... No, it's them too!
