A boy without magic in a magical world
... and for once the lynchpin of the story is not his lack of magic. A deeply satisfying fantasy, with enough minor hooks to bring you back to the next in the series, but the story arc here concludes well and is complete. If you are looking for fantasy and have read the usual suspects (though not equivalent, authors I would put next to this series on my bookshelf include David Eddings, David Gemmell and maybe Robin Hobb), I would recommend this.

Since the author is taking a long time to write the next Dresden Files novel, I thought I’d give this one a try. It is very different from Dresden Files. It starts slow, but develops characters nicely (including the villains! We actually get to see some of their motivations and backstory). Then the last quarter of the book gets exciting.

A solid fantasy novel. Like Butcher's Dresden Files books, there is a ton of action and a lot of people getting really beat up. Somehow this wears on me less in the fantasy genre. There are a lot of good, heroic characters and some cool magic done by elemental like creatures. I will keep reading these.
