Why did I wait so long to read this? It was beautiful. I'd worried a bit about reading it during our current pandemic, since when I read Severance by Ling Ma I got very caught up in what the author had "gotten wrong" about how the U.S. would respond to a pandemic. But since Mandel had her pandemic hit so quickly, there wasn't much focus on it actually, mainly on the before and after. I've had this book for a few years now, but it's taken me joining a science fiction book club to finally get around to reading it. I'd heard a lot of good things about it, so I went into it with high expectations. For the most part, it met those expectations.
Mandel is a fantastic writer. The plot hooked me right from the start, and her prose kept me immersed in the story. Even with all the time jumps and POV shifts, I stayed interested in all of it.

"Station Eleven" by Emily St. John Mandel is a story of how lives change after a pandemic wipes out 99% of the human population. It jumps from before and after the Georgia Flu, from one character to another, but I found the first half dragging; the characters were not engaging, and my interest in details of the world immediately post-disease was not fulfilled until the second half.
