I can't believe I haven't yet added this book. Ok, I really liked it, but I didn't go on to read the others; there are now 13 in total. When I read this, it was the only one. Although I enjoyed it, I'm not sure I feel motivated to read the sequels/the rest of the story. There's so many other books I might prefer to read; I haven't decided. But, I am glad I read this first book.

YA, Miserable Orphan Fiction. Everyone knows about the Baudelaire children and how their parents died in a fire, leaving them Dismal Orphans. I find the word "orphan" funny, so I got giggles out of how Count Olaf is constantly addressing the children as such (eg. "Good morning, orphans."), and I liked the narrator's self insertions, his snide little vocabulary lessons and colorful language, but the story itself wasn't anything special. A bit short for a thirty eight year old, but charming.

This was a reread for me but despite the terrible things that happen to the Baudelaire children, it's still a fun book to read! I've never finished the series (only read books 1-10) so I'm excited to read and reread the rest of the series.

Three orphaned children are miserable when they are forced to live with their scheming uncle. The narrator is quite funny, but the story itself is just average. There are a plethora of better books about orphans out there; I don't feel the need to read anymore in this series.
