This seems very much in the line of Madeleine L'Engle's work (and Susan Cooper's), as well as being within the broad scope of The Lord of Spirits podcast somehow. I may want to reread this and give it a fifth star.

I love the weird premise of a star being trapped in a dog's body as punishment for something. The majority of the book was from the dog's point-of-view. It does give us a few more opportunities to assess the personalities of other characters and the smells of the outdoors, but I found the first half slow. My friend was asking about the "master of the hunt" archetype, which is what made me curious about this book in the first place.

This was a heart-rendingly happysad book. Truly exquisite. It's that kind of masterful children's book that you remember your entire life, except I read it as a full-on adult. ...more
