Zombies infest the entire world but a small village survives, thanks to their sturdy fence. Sure. Given how easily the zombies break through in the book I had trouble believing this enclave survived for generations. If half stars were available I would give it another half, but it definitely isn't as good as Lament, which I just gave 4. It may have suffered a little from proximity, as I found the characters and setting in lament richer and more interesting. It probably also didn't hurt that I ha ...more

As chilling and tense as any zombie film, this book goes beyond the question of "What if zombies attacked?" to pose instead, "What would life be like 50+ years AFTER the zombies attacked? Zombies are just a way of life, you stay in the village, safely enclosed in high fences, you learn to fight as a child, and you know that if a member of your family is bitten, you have to kill them.

But what if the fences are breached?

I stayed up until 1 am to read finish this book, to find out who lives and who

Utter crap. It's "The Village" with zombies and a sprinkle of Hunger Games-esque love triangle. Only without anything vaguely compelling or interesting from any of those sources. All of the characters are boring and under-developed. The teenaged angst is omnipresent and tedious. The writing reminded me of "Twilight." Only worse. At least vampires and werewolves have something resembling a personality, unlike zombies. What is it with the zombies, anyway? I fail to see the appeal. They just moan a ...more

A paranormal romance of the post-apocalyptic horror variety. The characters were slightly better than average and for large portions of the book I really didn't know where the plot was going to lead. The normal sappiness of YA romances is balanced nicely with a hard multi-layered look at death. And then [if you'll excuse me spoiling the entirety of the text) (seriously, don't read this if you care even a little bit)(view spoiler) ...more

This was a well-written book, but I hate zombie books. I just didn't know that before I read this one. I kept hoping that there would be some sort of alternate explanation. Also, reading this while being the only one awake in the house didn't help much. Funnily enough, I made myself sing the Paschal hymn as a comfort ... "Christ is risen from the dead ..." so that was ironic. ...more

I've always steered clear of books about zombies. They just don't appeal to me in the least. At least, not in theory. Turns out that it's a completely different matter in practise. I didn't know anything about this book before I started, which was probably a good idea, or I doubt I'd ever have picked it up, but - surprise, surprise - I ended up being completely unable to put it down!

It probably helped quite a bit that it wasn't your stereotypical zombie tale, but more a dystopian novel that just

I don't know why my first YA Lit. zombie book surprised me with how dark it was, but oh boy, was it ever dark. And even thought they were called the "Unconsecrated," yes, they were still zombies. ...more

Smart title, and pretty good for a teen zombie romance. Lots of interesting questions presented and then left unanswered...room for a sequel, I suspect.

For some reason this made me think "Jacob I Have Loved, with zombies."

It was all right. Personally, I thought many of the characters were irritating, and the ending wasn't terribly rewarding.

Lot's of drama but the main character was so shiny and passive. I still might read the others in the series but I don't recommend rushing out for this one. ...more
