A lot of YA books have been touted as "the next Hunger Games" in the past few years, but ladies and gentlemen, we have our winner!
Except it's set on Mars. And is ten times more violent. And is a concept so freaking fascinating that I could not put it down. I mean . . . This book became my everything. The Hunger Games IN SPACE. Ender's Game WITH HUMAN EMOTIONS. Harry Potter BUT SCI-FI.
Things I liked: Found family. Outsiders rewriting the rules. World building.
Things I didn't like: The unbelievable competence of the main character at LITERALLY EVERYTHING. And for real, we are in the future, we have genetically engineered all of humanity, we are terraforming the outer reaches of the solar system, but we are still hung up on the Roman pantheon? ...more

Emotionally complex while a bit clumsy and hurried though the incredibly intricate plot, this book intrigued me enough to want to see Mr Brown's next attempt. Some gorgeous emotional moments.
