Okay, so I finished this book a couple of days ago now... and have been trying to figure out exactly how I felt about it. I've settled on 3 stars... I thought it was interesting, but there were definitely things I would have changed and absolutely things I could have done without.

The book started out quite slowly. At the beginning, I was like, "Errrmmm... this is popular? What??" It started with the mysterious flowers, and you're like, "What on EARTH is this book going to be about? Is this a Swe Okay, so I finished this book a couple of days ago now... and have been trying to figure out exactly how I felt about it. I've settled on 3 stars... I thought it was interesting, but there were definitely things I would have changed and absolutely things I could have done without.

The book started out quite slowly. At the beginning, I was like, "Errrmmm... this is popular? What??" It started with the mysterious flowers, and you're like, "What on EARTH is this book going to be about? Is this a Swedish thing?" (Okay, I didn't really think that second part...) And then there was the Wennerström case... BORING.... but at the same time, pretty important to the whole motivation of Mikael Blomkvist, so you can't really cut it out, although you could trim it down by about 75% in my opinion. It didn't really start to get interesting for me, personally, until Lisbeth Salander was introduced. Fascinating character. Sucks to be her (understatement of the century), but SO intriguing.

When I picked the book up (errr... turned the audiobook on?), I didn't expect the gross crimes against women. Maybe if the English title was ANYTHING like the original, which translates to "Men Who Hate Women", I would have been more prepared... I mean, WOW. "Girl with the Dragon Tattoo"?? Yeah, that gives you no warning whatsoever. The scene with Salander... phewwww.... *shakes her head in disbelief* What do you even say? Holy crap. I mean, the crimes Blomkvist and Salander end up uncovering later were VERY disturbing (they make Law & Order: SVU, which I will not watch because of the brutality of the crimes against women, look like a walk in the park), but what happened to Salander? Dag. I get her attitude toward a certain female character near the end. I mean, geez. There is a lovely payback scene though. *evil grin* Heehee. He SO deserved it.

Anyway, I hope that wasn't too spoilery for anyone, as I didn't mark it as such. I'm hoping it is too cryptic to understand if you haven't read it. If you're sensitive to sexual crimes, I'd steer clear. I'm kinda surprised I could handle it—and without nightmares even!

Oh, I did want to say about the VERY end... When the book finished, I was like, "Really? Are you SERIOUSLY going to end a book like this like THAT? CHEESE-OLA!" I raised one eyebrow and gave my mp3 player a disbelieving look, then rolled my eyes. ...more

Overall, I think this was a good thriller. If you liked the TV show Bones, then you will probably be able to stomach the gross murdering/torture aspects of the book and appreciate the exciting mystery that makes up most of this book. The prose is bearable but sometimes ridiculous.

I give this book two stars because it was a huge disappointment. I was hoping a book with a punk female hacker who would be awesome. I thought of how much I enjoyed the cyberpunk police thriller anime series Ghost in S ...more

Page-turning Fiction nonsense garbage. I wish someone had just bought Stieg Larsson a copy of The Sims with the Hot Date expansion pack so he could work out all his fantasies about a dude who is irresistible to women without subjecting us to it.
