I recently reread the first two books in this series. I've never been a Tamara Pierce fan but I've always liked this series over the Alana series.
Even when I first read these (maybe around 11 or 12) I didn't think they were fantastic, more entertaining than anything. But rereading them now... holy mother of Mary Sue, I realized what a huge cliché Kel is. She goes through absolutely zero character development in the first two books. Kel is by far the most ordinary heroine of Tamora Pierce's books, which is part of her charm... even if I do miss the magic. "Alanna" will always be my favourite Tortall quartet - especially since she was how I discovered Tamora Pierce in the first place - but "Protector of the Small" runs a close second.
