So I read this book for the first time ages ago, when I was a young teen. I was my first DWJ, and it's one that I liked so much that I eventually bought an ex-library copy from somewhere, and then a kindle version once that was available.

This is a book I read fairly young, and enjoyed immensely, then promptly forgot. I was able to find it through a "lost book" forum, and was ecstatic to find it was written by the remarkable Diana Wynne Jones. It was nearly as enjoyable to read as an adult, which is always remarkable in a children's or young reader's book.

One of my all time absolute favorites. This book has every single thing a book should have.
[2005 review.] This was one of my favorite books when I was a kid and luckily it's totally held up! This is, like, the perfect book. I love how I forget what happens every time I read it, so it's new all over again. Time travel! Myths! Fancy technology! History! Cool made-up food! (I asked my brother if he remembered the book from when we were kids, and he said, "the one with the butter pies?") ...more
