I pushed for us to read this one for book club because I hadn't read it yet. (We read 1984 in school. In 1983.) I had the usual problem I have with sf from this era, the inherent sexism/racism of the book, which no one else seemed to care about (all the alphas are male; the lowest caste is wearing black, and any black people seem to be lowest caste, and let's not talk about the Native Americans) other than Louise's comment that this seems an ideal way to perpetuate the white male control.
