After reading some of the other reviews on Goodreads, I can't say that, to me, this book wasn't at all like the Harry Potter series beyond the fact that the characters can do magic.

That said, I wasn't too impressed by this book. My laundry list of complaints: the short chapters became annoying, the character voices weren't as differentiated as I'd hoped, I couldn't connect with either Wisty or Whit, the dialogue was a bit awkward and overdone, and the story just felt so limited.

There was so much potential here and the bones of an interesting plot, but sadly, it just wasn't good. Everyone has their own preferences and I just don't think I'm a fan of Patterson's writing. ...more

Last night I had to stop myself from staying up well past my bedtime to finish this book - it's that engrossing. The dystopian society is Handmaid's Tale-esque, and the magical touches will make it more fun for students to read. Obviously I can't say too much because of the spoiler issue, but this will be a huge crossover hit (at MPOW, Patterson really only appeals to boys, but girls will enjoy meeting Wisty).

I read the prologue, and the first 2 chapters... and came up with a huge WTF. SO I stopped, I have too much to get back to the library to deal with trying to get past it.

Did not finish. This would be a great book for a reluctant reader - short and fast paced chapters, high stakes... magic and evil villains.
