A veritable classic, what more can you say! Despite the course of time this is still a great story. After all the collections of stories about Sherlock Holmes I really enjoyed the greater depth that a novel allowed with a very intriguing story and some great inventiveness in the writing! I wish he'd written more as extended novels. Definitely should be read by everyone.

This is the first Sherlock Holmes that I've read and from what I can tell from other reviews, probably his best! I loved it. The book was again, as I have found with numerous books from the 1001 books list, nothing like I imagined it to be. I really enjoyed the tone of the book, especially once the action switched to the moors. The supernatural element gives the mystery just the right edge. I might have enjoyed this more had I read it instead of listening to an audio. Holmes is smug enough without having an annoying poncy accent thrown on top. I also wasn’t particularly invested in the story or the setting. Having recently fallen in love with Thomas Hardy’s moors I found Doyle’s to be far less intriguing. I know that they were supposed to be menacing but you can do menace and beauty simultaneously. On the plus side we get more Watson and less Holmes which I for one prefer.

“Really, Watson, you excel yourself," said Holmes, pushing back his chair and lighting a cigarette. "I am bound to say that in all the accounts which you have been so good as to give of my own small achievements you have habitually underrated your own abilities. It may be that you are not yourself luminous, but you are a conductor of light. Some people without possessing genius have a remarkable power of stimulating it. I confess, my dear fellow, that I am very much in your debt.”

I give it three stars, I moderately enjoyed it and admire the clever plot line. It deserves to be on the list because it is often referenced in other books. I have been at a Readers' and Writers' Conference this weekend and the Hound was mentioned twice! It is part of the English canon.
