This tale puts the reader in the role of listening to Marlow recount his harrowing experiences as a young ship's captain working for "the company" in the Belgian Congo. When he arrives in the Congo, he is quite excited about meeting Mr Kurtz, another company employee who is rumored to have fallen ill. The story also highlights many of the issues with colonialism ---- are the enlightened Europeans really the evil ones?
