Reread 2022: changing my rating to 4 stars (original rating 3 stars)

Spellbound is my favorite Guild Codex series and the early parts here are so much fun when you know all these characters' secrets and everything that's still to come for them.

This is a wonderful, fun urban fantasy series about a human main character who gets drawn into a world of magic and (this might be a slight spoiler, but it’s also one of the things that makes this series so special for me, so I’ll just go ahead and say it) Reread 2022: changing my rating to 4 stars (original rating 3 stars)

Spellbound is my favorite Guild Codex series and the early parts here are so much fun when you know all these characters' secrets and everything that's still to come for them.

This is a wonderful, fun urban fantasy series about a human main character who gets drawn into a world of magic and (this might be a slight spoiler, but it’s also one of the things that makes this series so special for me, so I’ll just go ahead and say it) doesn’t discover her own heretofore unknown magical heritage. She just remains human and learns to hold her own in a magical world anyway! It has humor, sass, great themes of friendship and found family and a delicious slow-burn romance sub-plot. All of my favorite things!
I absolutely love Tori and she is probably my favorite of the Guild Codex heroines, though Robin is not far behind. But I have to admit it took me a while to fall in love with Tori. The first time I attempted to read this book, I dropped it again after a few pages because I had no patience for her. On my second attempt I pushed past that initial annoyance and finished the book. And I enjoyed it. It was fun, even though Tori sometimes tested my patience and rubbed me the wrong way. (It would take me until Spellbound #4 to completely fall in love with her character and the series as a whole.)
When I recently reread the series, however, I loved Tori from the get-go! Maybe loving her because of the kind of character she is later in the series, I didn’t get annoyed with her at all even here. Or maybe she never was all that annoying in the first place, and I just wasn’t in the right kind of mood when I first read this series. I’m inclined to believe it’s a bit of both, but more of the former, since it took multiple attempts – months apart – for me to finish the book the first time and that was because I had trouble warming up to Tori initially.
If you start this series and find it entertaining and fun enough, but wish it would go a little deeper… I suggest you stick with it and enjoy some light reading with the first few. There’s so much going on below the surface that doesn’t come out until later in the series. The first few books hold most of the intriguing secrets very close to the chest, revealing little. But if you’re patient and stick with it, the payoff by the second half of the series is soooooo worth it.
