For a long time I've been extremely bothered by Princess Crap. It's so insidious and normalizing. I hadn't read any books on the subject, and had seen mention of it before. To learn more about this phenomenon, I picked up Cinderella Ate My Daughter: Dispatches from the Frontlines of the New Girlie-Girl Culture by Peggy Orenstein.

Great book. It's not as though I didn't know some of this information already, but reading it as the parent of an almost-3-year-old daughter, a lot of it is actually kind of chilling. Ie, even if I congratulate myself now on having a daughter whose favorite color is red, and seems oblivious to the princess stuff... 1. She's only 3 - there's a lot of time for all of that to come, and 2. Great, so you raise a daughter who goes against the princess grain. How's that going to play in kindergarten, w ...more

It took me multiple library check-outs to finish this book and now I'm left trying to remember what I got from it. It was well-researched and full of conviction, but also perhaps already left behind in the torrent of time and gender scholarship that has happened in the years since its been published. I'm ambivalent about pink and princesses, but also is this what we really should be worried about? In summary, competent, but not essential. ...more
