I had heard glowing reviews of this book, purchased it on sale for my Kindle, and received it as a selection in the Politics and Prose book club...and yet it sat unread for months. I finally picked it up last weekend and was initially afraid that the fact that the main character is revealed to be a grieving mother in the prologue would be too much for me to handle. This was amazingly good, almost a perfect book. 3 women's voices, showing us a land of fear, and power, and major plate tectonics. A must read if you like your fiction with a touch of sciency magic, or if you have apocalyptic leanings.

I’m a member of the Star Wars generation, so I’m no stranger to science fiction. But, when I’m entering a new world, it takes a minute to get oriented. You have to learn the new names of characters, of countries/planets, of curse words. With Jemisin, it took me a little longer (or maybe I’m just getting old!), but once I got the hang of the vernacular, I enjoyed the sandbox that I was playing in.
