I've heard about this book for years and it has been sitting on my shelf for at least two years. I always knew I would love it, and maybe it is this certainty that didn't urge me to read it even though it's been in my possession for a while. In any case, I finally took the step to read it in these vacation days and it was as beautiful as I had expected it to be.

The opening of the book hooked me, had me clamoring to inhale it. The descriptions, the richness of the setting, and the curiosity of our narrator made for a gripping beginning. Eventually I started to get bogged down in those details, in the alleys and shops of a city I have never seen. The characters and intrigue multiplied, and I got lost among them. By the (long awaited) denouement, I was invested again, and ate up the ending. It was worth the near-slog through the middle.

Do you wish to be entranced? Frightened? Enveloped in a love story? A mystery? Do you wish that one book can take you into a world of books and show you the depths of human emotion, frailty, power, seduction, hatred, and desire? If you liked Eizabeth Kostova's The Historian, this book would tempting. The characters are nicely presented as well as the city of Barcelona. Nice read about love, betreyal, crimes and policemen in times of general Franco. ...more
