At first this book seemed like just a trifle--funny but lightweight. Eventually, however it revealed itself as something deeper, shot through with melancholy and regret but also, too, optimism.
If you can get past the artifice of story structure (told primarily through e-mails, letters, etc--I had no problem with this, some may find it too gimmicky) you'll find a deeply rewarding story about love, loss and getting it all back. I love hated this book. I can't stop thinking about it. I was pulled into it right away, resentful at feeling somehow manipulated into liking it so fast. Everything is all ultra-Seattle, which I guess is meant to be part of the satire, and it's rad. The commentary on Seattle parenting is what I was hoping for when I read POSER, and reading this reaffirmed my desire to avoid private schools and affluent neighborhood schools.
