This book took my breath away. It was a beautifully written story about two sisters in France, living through WWII in very different ways. It was also a story of family, of survival, and of conflict. I didn't want it to end.

I would have given this book 5 stars if there had been even one decently-written BIPOC character in it, but there were exactly 0. The story itself is moving, requiring one to think about the details of daily life during war, under an authoritarian occupying government, from the point of view of people - that is, women - who were not soldiers. And Kristin Hannah's writing itself is always compelling, in this case brought alive by Polly Stone's engrossing narration. But I will always struggle with
