I've read a lot of WWII fiction, but this is one of the best descriptions of the women's homefront in Nazi occupied Europe that I've ever read. The level of poverty and despair they had to face each and every day, many of them without their husbands for the first time in their lives, is so heartbreaking yet rarely focused on in the genre. It took me a while to read but what an incredible book about France in WWII during the occupation. Well researched, great story, believable characters.
My favorite quote was this:
You’re not alone, and you’re not the one in charge,” Mother said gently. “Ask for help when you need it, and give help when you can. I think that is how we serve God—and each other and ourselves—in times as dark as these.
