I've read a lot of WWII fiction, but this is one of the best descriptions of the women's homefront in Nazi occupied Europe that I've ever read. The level of poverty and despair they had to face each and every day, many of them without their husbands for the first time in their lives, is so heartbreaking yet rarely focused on in the genre. It took me a while to read but what an incredible book about France in WWII during the occupation. Well researched, great story, believable characters.
My favorite quote was this:

A really good historical fiction - I loved how the characters had flaws and seemed real. The relationship between the sisters, the moral quandaries of war, romance, and hope in the future. It's all here.
