Beautiful and mesmerizing beyond words

I could watch the sea serpent undulate forever. I appreciated the Ilvermorny houses more because their beasts were featured.
I liked that the illustrations are diverse in style. It gave the feel of having different source materials.

This was a really interesting and entertaining lesson on all of the mythical creatures in the Harry Potter world. It also gave a little insight into Newt Scamander's character. I listened to the audio book version which is read by Eddie Redmayne which was immensely enjoyable and brought to life this text book like book. I could picture (and hear) the movie version of Newt telling me all about the creatures he loves. ...more

Charming little book (haha; a pun!) about all the magical beasts in Harry Potter's wizarding world. I particularly enjoyed the introduction and the about-the-author, especially knowing that Newt will be appearing in an upcoming film (or three). The encyclopedia section, which makes up the bulk of this slim volume, was a little dry with the exceptions of animals that were already familiar, either from the books (Hungarian Horntails and Hippogriffs) or from the "Muggle world" (unicorns, merpeople, ...more

It was 2000 when I first read Harry Potter. My friend Super Suz recommended the series to me but I put off reading it for ages. I wasn’t into reading much young adult stuff back then and my argument for not reading them was that I wasn’t interested in reading children’s book. How book-snobbish of me.

It was around the time the first film was coming out and I was hearing a lot about the controversy that was being stirred up over witchcraft and censorship. Censorship and banning books is one of my

see my review of the supplemntary book about quidditch, & swap out everything about quidditch & replace it with info on magical creatures. same possibly interesting background info that feeds into the actual books, same confusing, light-hearted voice. one good thing about these books is that they were written for charity. the profits from them (which i suspect are considerable, given the enormous popularity of the series) are donated to a children's charity. so, that's nice. though i got mine th ...more

This was better than the quidditch companion volume, and fun light reading. But LIGHT is the key word--I was disappointed how small this book was. did it expand my knowledge of Rowling's universe even more? yes--but not as in-depth as I'd hoped for. this book is great for kids, as a gag gift for a serious Harry Potter fan, or as a silly fun read. But don't read it expecting the book that Rowling describes in her HP series, because this isn't it. ...more

It's such a pleasure to reread my kindle illustrated cover and connect the book beasts to the movie versions.
To future self, try the audiobook next time.

Cute, and good for giant Harry Potter fans. Animal stuff is never my favorite so I knew this wouldn't really be for me, but it was still enjoyable. ...more
