There's no doubt that this book is an easy read. You can skim right along. There's also some amusing imagery and turns of phrase. It reads like a folk tale, or like someone is chatting with you.
I seem to have an issue accessing Latin American magical realism. I can't think of a book that I loved in this style, and this one is no exception. Relectura que disfrute muchísimo

I have had this book on my TBR list for a few years. I don't know why I kept putting off reading this book.
I really enjoyed the stories being told with the different recipes for the different events in the lives of the De la Garza family. The birth of the youngest daughter Tita and how she is supposed to never get married. Since Tita is the youngest she has to stay and take care of her mother until she dies. Tita is denied true love.

Hmm...I'm not sure what to think about this one. Magical realism and I don't seem to get along because I just thought this one strange. I can't quite suspend my disbelief enough to get behind this one. While the themes of family relationships and love that can't be were good, the magical part just took them to such a weird place. And the addition of all the recipes didn't add anything for me. This book just wasn't for me.
