I struggle with magical realism. It just seems silly to me. It seemed even sillier when I read that Ms Esquivel said this isn't "magical realism," it's just "normal and an everyday thing to me."

I was really not a fan of this. But I think I'm realizing that I don't really like or get the whole magical realism genre.
There were some CRAZY scenes in this books too, mass vomiting a la Stand by Me...some murdering, including cutting off someone's testicles...and a really mean momma.
I think it might be worth it to read, especially if you like that whole scene, but if you don't get into it, I don't think you would miss much if you put it down. ...more

I like the format but the story was melodramatic and a little oddly paced.

i read this my freshman year of college. i stayed up very late after finishing a paper one night just to read the 2nd half of the book.. it felt like reading a grown up fairy tale
