This book is devastating, relentless, and depressing. It should be required reading for all U.S. citizens. High school history classes really should teach kids just exactly how our country expanded west. As an American of European descent, I am thoroughly disgusted. Invasion and destroying other people's cultures is bad enough, but we did even worse than take the Indians' land and systematically destroy so many of their cultures. Read on.

Dee Brown's poignant narrative is well researched, with an excellent bibliography of the author's sources. It is also well illustrated, with photos or paintings of the various leaders of the native American tribes of the time. This was a devastating read - it was such a difficult book to get through simply because it was so horrific, tragic and unbelievably callous. How does one sum up the systematic genocide of the Native American Indians in the nineteenth century? Well, I've finally finished this, but I just can't rate it. It's very well written, and brings the story to life, but the subject matter is so harrowing and made me so angry that I can't give it any positive stars.
