This first instalment in Simenon's Maigret series serves to introduce the Chief Inspector and presents a rather confusing and muddled mystery, with lots of racing around Paris and out to the seaside in pursuit of the criminal. Maigret himself is an intriguing and complex character, and I look forward to reading more in the series and watching how he develops.

This is my first Maigret (and my first Simenon.) Hugely enjoyable, with a fantastic central character. He dogs his suspects until, in this case anyway, they are demented by the constant site of him into foolish acts. I lingered over the book, thinking it was the only Maigret I had, but it could easily be read in a couple of hours. And I'm happy to report I've found another one on my Kindle...

This is a fine, but rather convoluted, mystery introducing us to Maigret. It was an excellent first look at the famous character and the turf he works.
A quintessential Maigret replete with beer, sandwiches, crooks and intrigue milling around in Paris.
