This is Agatha Christie's second ever mystery (after "The Mysterious Affair at Styles") first published in 1922. It is also the first Tommy and Tuppence book and, although Christie is my favourite author of all time, for some reason I hadn't read this series before.

Having finished it, it reminded me a little of the early Campion books. This is not so much a mystery as an adventure. It begins on the Lusitania, when a young woman - Jane Finn - is given some secret papers before getting aboard a li

Published in 1922, The Secret Adversary was Christie’s second novel, coming directly on the heels of The Mysterious Affair At Styles, her first Poirot outing which was published in 1920. For the first decade or so of Christie’s career she dabbled heavily in the thriller/espionage genre, publishing The Man in the Brown Suit, The Secret of Chimneys, The Seven Dials Mystery and The Big Four, all of which deal with international crime gangs and conspiracies with varying levels of competence and succ ...more

This is the first Tommy & Tuppence book, and the characters take over the book in a way Hercules Poirot and Jane Marple are never able to do. The couple is broke, bored, and desperately in need of jobs. They decide to join hands to seek adventure. Of course, the pay needs to be good. A chance encounter leads to the prospect of a job for Tuppence, but when she says the words 'Jane Finn', all hell breaks loose. Curious, the two sleuths embark on a hair-raising adventure, full of kidnappings, murde ...more

Hercule Poirot and Miss Marple are the better known sleuths of Agatha Christie’s pen, yet Tommy and Tuppence are also engaging in their detective adventures. The time period is after WWI, in fact, the story begins shortly after the sinking of the Luistiania.
Lots of snappy dialogue with British slang thrown in. My version had footnotes which were both helpful and a distraction to the story.
An engaging read with typical Christie red herrings.

One of Christie's earliest novels, and the first to feature Tommy and Tuppence, is more of a spy/secret society mystery than a cozy murder, and doesn't work quite so well as her Poirots or Marples. Nonetheless, a fun romp through a 1920's post-war London adventure, and Tommy and Tuppence are an endearing pair. ...more
