Gosh, I am bawling my eyes out! Poirot is dead, and it is the end of an era. :'( Christie wrote this book during World War II and hid it away in a safe vault since she was not sure she would survive the war. But she wanted to be sure that Poirot had his finale the way she wanted and she did not want anyone else to appropriate her character (are you listening, Sophie Hannah?). The book was later published in the 70s.

Poirot is back at Styles and so is Hastings, back to the place where they first m

Oh well that's it. He has gone now. Maybe in years to come I will be able to bring him back into my life. I have had this book for years but never read it, as I just didn't want to register the death of Poirot.
Christie has done this so well, and as usual, she didn't give anything away until the very end.

We've come to the end of the Poirot novels, and Christie brings it to a close by taking us back to Styles, the setting for the first Poirot novel, and Christie's first mystery. Poirot is a frail old man now, and a widowed Hastings has been invited back to act as Poirot's eyes and ears while they solve a final mystery. While the secondary characters do not ring quite true, and the set-up is a bit overdone, this is ultimately a last outing for Poirot and Hastings, and it is great to see them back ...more

Poirot and Hastings are back at Styles - the scene of their first case together. It is now a guest house run by Colonel and Mrs Lutterell. Hastings' daughter, Judith, is there too working for a Dr Franklin whose hypochondriac wife is also a guest. Hastings is shocked to see how frail his old friend has become and he fears for his life. Poirot is more sanguine about and knows this will be his last case. He tells Hastings that there will be murder committed and that the murderer has killed before ...more

As much as I enjoy the David Suchet Hercule Poirot series I can't say the same for Agatha Christie's original stories of the famous Belgian sleuth. While they are quick and entertaining, perfect for that lazy summer day read, they are also frustrating. The main reason is due to Dame Christie's penchant for red herring chases. She drops so many false leads that one needs to construct a spread sheet to keep it all straight. This is very much the case in Curtain, the last of the Hercule Poirot stor ...more

An average finish for an otherwise utterly delightful series, although you really couldn't have another ending from this. ...more
