Liked this a lot. Third Girl is not an expression I was familiar with, but made sense. Poor Poirot is told he is too old, and he really takes it to heart, seeking consolation from Ariadne Oliver. Only to find that the person who had told him, was in fact an acquaintance of Mrs Oliver. This all leads on to an investigation where Poirot's little grey cells have to work where some of the information is accidentally withheld from him, but he feels he has too much information, and longs for a murder. ...more

A young woman comes to see Hercule Poirot without an appointment and having spoken to him for a few minutes, telling him she thinks she has committed a murder, she announces he can't help her as he is too old and walks out. Poirot is to say the least, rather offended - not to say intrigued. He speaks to his friend Mrs Ariadne Oliver, the crime novelist. She recalls suggesting to a girl of similar appearance that she consult Poirot and remembers enough about her for them to find out who she is.

While I found the plot less than compelling, I liked that Adriadne Oliver took an active part in the investigation and that Poirot's 'operative' that talks only to the furniture made a couple of appearances. Poirot's neatness, uncomfortable shoes and dietary oddities are on display. Butler and secretary have their assigned roles. ...more
