It's not that Agatha Christie has never written a bad book in her career. Though I love most of her books, I do not like some of her more political novels. So while I am not shocked that I disliked this book, never has Christie written something so meandering and pointless.

This was published in 1966, the year I was born. There is often an assumption that Christie's later works are not as good as those in her classic years - the 1930's and 1940's. Still, recently I have read both this and Endless Night, published in 1967, and both were far better than I had expected. Christie was born in 1890 and died in 1976 (by the age of ten I was already a fan and vividly remember crying when she died). A young woman comes to see Hercule Poirot without an appointment and having spoken to him for a few minutes, telling him she thinks she has committed a murder, she announces he can't help her as he is too old and walks out. Poirot is to say the least, rather offended - not to say intrigued. He speaks to his friend Mrs Ariadne Oliver, the crime novelist. She recalls suggesting to a girl of similar appearance that she consult Poirot and remembers enough about her for them to find out who she is.
