3.5 stars - if I read this one previously, I don’t recall - read with the Reading the Detectives Group for our Poirot Challenge, I listened to the Hugh Fraser audiobook while reading along. As always, he’s a lovely narrator, but this story was not great.

This is a pretty middle of the road Poirot mystery. Poirot's secretary Miss Lemon is highly preoccupied due to the issues her sister, a widow newly returned from Singapore and now managing a student boarding house, is having. Items have gone missing at the boarding house, and they do not add up to any obvious pattern. In steps Poirot, obviously bored and looking for diversion, where he puts his gray cells to work and comes up with murder and conspiracy. Not as well-plotted or as interesting some ...more

Unless I am mistaken - will have to check the list again - this is the last Poirot novel that I haven't read. I wish that it had been stronger for that, and many other reasons. The premise and set-up are great; the execution and solution, not so much. It's still Christie, so I still get lots of pleasure from it, but it's not one I'd recommend to those not already on the bandwagon. ...more
