3.5 stars for a different Poirot mystery I don’t recall reading. This was very good once the murder occurred and Poirot was on the scene, but the first several chapters were taken up with a lot of melodrama setting the scene among a group of friends who would be attending a weekend house party at The Hollow, where the murder would eventually take place.

2.5 stars This is one of those rare Christie's that I'm 'meh' about. More melodramatic than Dame Agatha's usual fare; almost everyone is having an existential crisis and worshiping the victim who was an absolute swine. It's soapy, but not in a fun way. AC improved this plot when she turned it into a stageplay: same good mystery, less tortured melodrama.

It was ok. Somehow seemed to lack Poirot-ness. Not many investigations by Poirot. Not many french 'mon-ami's. No twinkle of green eyes. He generally gathers all suspects in one room and says who the killer is. Not that either in this book.
