Upped my rating to 5 stars for this Christie classic. Still a gobsmacking twist at the end, even knowing whodunnit!

2023 read: 4.5 stars - I wasn’t sure, but realized at the shocking end, when I wasn’t shocked, that I had read this many, many years ago!

Christie is my favorite mystery writer, and like many mystery buffs I first read her books in my teens - so long ago. I’ve periodically reread favorites (Miss Marple and several of the Poirot mysteries), but not this one. I couldn’t remember detail ...more

The Murder of Roger Ackroyd is definitely one of Agatha Christie’s best, but it was a reread for me, so I knew who the killer was. And the whodunnit is what makes this such a great mystery.

Hercule Poirot has “retired” to the peaceful village of King’s Abbot, keeping his former career as a detective a secret, but of course someone – Roger Ackroyd – is killed. Enjoyed Poirot coming out of retirement to solve another locked room murder. The ending is probably what makes this mystery so enjoyable. It is a lovely twist that most, if they are honest, won't see coming. ...more
