Recently, I have been reading the Albert Campion series. I have struggled with Margery Allingham before, and, although I have enjoyed the first two books in the series, I was underwhelmed by this.

The mystery opens well. We have Val Gyrth, an aristocratic down and out, threatened by kidnappers and lured to safety by Campion. To give him his full name, Percival St John Wykes Gyrth, belongs to an old family who are the keepers of the Gyrth Chalice. Campion informs him that someone is out to steal

An heirloom, which for reasons left unexplained is so valuable to the nation that its loss will result in everything the family owns being forfeit to the Crown, is targeted by thieves. Conveniently for the plot, if the ringleader can be taken out of commission, the theft is to be abandoned. Campion, with his characteristic pose of foolishness and vapidity, comes to the rescue. And entertaining, if implausible, romp.

I think I have discovered a new author to join Agatha Christie in my short list of favorite cozy mystery authors. Albert Campion is fun, exciting, amusing, and interesting. I don’t always get his pop references of the day, but I really enjoy his quirky personality. The way he was introduced in this book was so easy to visualize and so great!

I will definitely check out more of Margery Allingham’s books!

Gyrth rose to his feet and stood looking at Campion in slow horror. 'What you are saying is, in effect, then,' he said, 'if we want to protect the one thing that's really precious to me and my family, the one thing that must come before everything else with me, we must find out the man employed by this society, and murder him?' Mr Campion surveyed his visitor with the utmost gravity. 'Shall we say "dispose of him"?' he suggested gently. ...more

Allingham is not my favorite golden age author but in this book I see some growth in Campion. Maybe next book he’ll actually detect something - in this early entry in the series, like the others before, it all seems to come together behind the scenes. The mystery itself was really far-fetched with all that stuff about the secret organization but overall still an enjoyable read.

Really liked this book. It had all sorts of different elements included, which made it a great read.

A fun adventurous romp but I will be glad when Campion settles down to more realistic assignments.
