This is an interesting collection of Poirot stories; first published in 1924 and all of which feature Hastings as narrator. Hastings often comments on how conceited Poirot is, although this is justified, as Poirot uses his ‘little grey cells,’ to solve many mysteries and even wins a bet with Japp, during this book.

The stories involve missing jewels, blackmail, mysterious insurance claims, the even more intriguing case of a ‘very cheap flat,’ in an expensive part of London (unheard of!) which pi

So, I'm rereading Christie in publication order. I'm not sure I will read all of the short story collections, but I saw this one at Powell's for cheap when I was there with OB, so I grabbed it.

Overall, this is a satisfying collection of short stories starring Poirot, and narrated by Hastings. The compilation was published in 1924, after Murder on the Links. The Man in the Brown Suit was also published in 1924.

This was a first read for me, although I have previously read at least a few of the sto

When you have Richard Armitage reading Agatha Christie, what's not to like. I love these short stories, first published in the 1920s. (Free in the Audible Plus catalog.)

Poirot Investigates (1924) by Agatha Christie is one of the few Christie books that I don't own and I don't believe I've ever read.* The original British edition contained eleven short stories while the American edition (which I have read) includes an additional three. These early stories by Christie show a heavy influence of Doyle's Sherlock Holmes. Poirot keeps his clues extraordinarily close to his chest and in some instances we don't even get a peek at them. Hastings is endlessly annoyed tha ...more

Yeah, nope. I might have made a mistake trying Agatha Christie chronologically, because these early stories were pretty bad. It's mostly Poirot and Hastings talking to each other, with nary an interesting minor character in the mix. The cases were generic, and okay, the first one almost put me off. There is a racist slur for Chinese people, which I am aware is characteristic of the era, but still unpleasant. I just cannot bring myself to care about English gentry missing gemstones which they hav ...more

I went through an Agatha Christie phase in middle school or so, but back then acquiring novels in a series could be difficult. No internet, tiny bookstores in malls with a random couple here and there and the only option to fill in the gaps was to go into Toronto to the World’s Biggest Bookstore, which I didn’t do much for Christie, I think because really her books can pretty much be standalones.

I think my reading of Christie started when my parents gave me a set of three hardcovers, one with f

A delightful collection of early Poirot mysteries, each one only 5-7 pages and complete in itself, with Hastings and all the usual delights of Golden Age mysteries.

A superb collection of 18 stories featuring the eponymous detective Hercule Poirot and his sidekick, Capt. hastings. Though I confess some of the plots were devilishly clever while others were not so great. ITV has dramatised all the stories here and is a fun point to imagine these stories with David Suchet/Hugh Fraser in your head.

All in all, a fun collection of mysteries and with the coming holidays a must-read while sipping hot cocoa!

My Rating - 4/5

This is a collection of short stories. Because of the short length of the stories, there wasn’t much suspense or build-up in the stories which was kind of a disappointment. Hercule Poirot fans can skip this one without missing out on anything.
