What Members Thought

I would give this book a 3.5.
I enjoyed this slightly more than the first book, where we are first introduced to inspector Alleyn and Nigel Bathgate.
In this one, the duo are together watching a play when the the murder is committed on stage right before their eyes.
Alleyn is still slightly abrasive and Nigel is still finding his feet in this second book of the series.
I enjoyed the theatre setting and backstage mechanics.

I enjoyed the behind-the-scenes look at theatre life, but the resolution to the mystery itself was unsatisfying.

Was an interesting murder mystery, however not far into the book I had worked out who had committed the deed. I liked the detective Alleyn, and found it unusual to find a detective with a bit of a sense of humour. I'm not really a fan of Nigel Bathgate , the detective's newspaper reporter companion, who occupied a lot of the book's activity. I think probably the officers Fox and Bailey would appeal to me more in this roll, but could see that as a friend of the actors in question, he was useful.

3.5 stars. I was disappointed because I really enjoyed the first book. The murder takes place in a theatre. I found her descriptions of the stage and backstage hard to follow. The characters weren't as interesting as book 1.
