I'm really enjoying these books! I had gotten totally hooked on the 2015 BBC TV series, and absolutely fallen in love with the characters and the story. In spite of the fact that the books were written in the 1940s, it still reads as well as something that was published this year. The book goes a lot deeper into what is going on inside the characters, so characters (especially Keren) are much more fully developed on the page than they translated on the screen.

Well, I'm thoroughly hooked. A series about a Revolutionary War veteran who returns to his native Cornwall is not one I thought I'd like so much, but Graham is absolutely a terrific writer, immersing you in a very tough landscape and climate, a backward time (medicine and just keeping warm are awful), and thoroughly engaging people. Even though there's much more (view spoiler) in this sequel I enjoyed it even more than the first. Even though you kind of wish it could all be about the main characters because you love them so much even the minor characters are just so well-drawn that you can't help but become absorbed with their lives.
