Twas good, twas good, although not as good as the first.

I loved the storyline with Keren and Mark and Dwight, although it was a bit questionable (view spoiler).

I loved the storyline with Keren and Mark and Dwight, although it was a bit questionable (view spoiler).

Sadly in the second book Ross begins his journey of becoming slight more - how should I say it? - unhinged . He's not always the most patient with Demelza, but I suppose his flaws make him more realistic in a sense. I think perhaps it would've been more effective if the book ended with (view spoiler).

The deducted star is for two reasons:
1. Whoever edited this book... did you do it in five minutes?? The amount of mistakes there were was unbelievable: sometimes the speech wouldn't end with a speech mark; sometimes full stops were used instead of commas; quite often a "b" was used instead of an "h", so there were lots of instances of "over tbere" or "tbere was"; there were quite a few word repetitions like in one of the last chapters it said "there there was a fire grate". These mistakes are just distracting, they pull you out of the story and detract from the overall magic of it.

Despite these mistakes there were some really nice sentences, for example:
"Her laughter bubbled up again, overflowed and ran with the wind."
"Dawn had just broken, and in a clear sky seven black clouds were following each other across the lightening east like seven ill-begotten sons of the storm."
Although I would say, overall the writing wasn't quite as strong as the first book.

2. The second aspect that lost a star was some of the questionable things, like (view spoiler), and in one chapter there was a random offhand comment about Wilberforce caring more about black slaves than the poor in his own country, as well as Ross becoming a bit more controlling and unpredictable.

But all in all, it was still a very enjoyable read, and I'll definitely read the other books in the series. ...more
