My favorite part of the book was the way the traditional Mexican recipes and home remedies were interwoven into the story. The beginning of the book held so much promise.
Problems:
The author was inconsistent on how much time/importance she placed on the recipes and cooking.
There was no background/reasoning as to why Rosaura would marry Pedro.
I would have liked the magic to be contained only within the bounds of food/cooking, not random fires bursting into flames and blankets bigger than the ran ...more

I adored this book and will probably reread it, just to savor it again. Reading it, you feel like you're sitting at the feet of your grandmother and being included into a rich and beautiful family legend. The writing is exquisite, the narrative is fanciful and the heroine, Tita, becomes an old friend.

Read this when it was in its heyday, and I loved the "magical realism" and mysticism and romanticism and food and all.
Tried listening to this in my car this week, and the "magical realism" and mysticism irritated the hell out of me, I wanted to murder Pedro, any attractions the food might have held were wiped out in a literal river of vomit, and I hate everyone in the book. Maybe the abridgment is to blame - but I doubt it. ...more
