'Station Eleven' is one of the most lyrical post-apocalyptic novels I’ve read. This might be due to the central theme of the book – Because survival is insufficient.

Twenty years after a flu pandemic wipes out most of the world’s population, a Traveling Symphony moves around the Michigan area to bring music and Shakespeare to the random ‘towns’ they encounter. After seeing so much praise and enthusiasm for this book on bookstagram and booktube, I was worried it wouldn't live up to the hype.

Alas: it was even better than I expected.

What a rare work. Quietly haunting imagery, a compelling plot, lyrical writing that is consistently beautiful but never verges on being florid or "purple." This is a lovely, beautifully structured, beautifully sad novel about a society after a flu wipes out 99 percent of the human population. It's elaborately constructed, but never confusing, flashing back and forth between the time before the flu and the world after.

​Let’s just go ahead and get this out of the way. I really wanted to love this book. The premise is exactly what I enjoy about a dystopian novel, but the execution just wasn’t something that left me hooked. I tried reading this one twice (once as a physical book, successfully as an audiobook) because so many people have raved about it.
