What Members Thought
I forgot how brutal this book was, and how much I revile and pity each of the characters within it in turn - selfish, proud, cruel, tender - thank heaven for Nelly Dean - Brontë's skill, then, is evident not just in the evocative weaving of the landscape but in how she draws her characters so finely and sweeps everything, including the reader, before her.
