I prefer more realistic looking dragons, but this is a very cute counting book and very cleverly executed. There is a lot of detail in the illustrations; a reader could pore over each page for hours. And there is so much for the reader to do: look for the dragon, look for the little boy looking for the dragon; and count the colored items on each page. The end paper map of the dragon's meanderings is an added plus.

Have you ever had that feeling of total panic when two seconds have passed, you turn around and a child or a pet has vanished? Heart racing you back track as quickly as you can, looking in all the possible places either might be. Thankfully what seems like minutes is usually less than one, when they are found or reappear.
Granted, depending on where you are during this vanishing act or on the size of the beloved being, it may be easier to locate them. Have You Seen My DRAGON? (Candlewick Press) w ...more

In Light’s Have You Seen My Dragon? a little boy searches for his dragon in a detailed, labyrinthine cityscape. Though the setting is drawn in black and white, the little boy is almost the only thing in color. Almost…because this book is also a counting book (1-20) and a seek-and-find book. This precious book with it's ink drawings combines counting (to 20) with the features of the big city, the little boy exploring the city, and the boy's dragon, who has gone missing and is hiding among the pictures on each page. The clever use of color for the counting items on each spread is especially appreciated. If I were teaching K or 1, or had a little one to sit on my lap, this story would get lots of reading, I'm sure.

Our newest favorite "counting to 20" picture book. The highly detailed, imaginative illustrations are top notch. My kids spent a good deal of time reading this one and searching for that sneaky dragon. Map on the endpapers a nice bonus! This book definitely appeals to a broader age range than the average counting book.

This is a Find-the-Hidden-Dragon counting book with smart double spread pen-and-ink drawings. This will be a favorite with young readers who enjoy lots of visual detail. An added bonus is the map of the dragon hunt on the endpapers.

Counting up to 20 with a dragon wondering through New York. Great for preschool and I can see Kinders making their own Dragon counting books. Has enough look fors to susantain many readings.
