Now I’m going to be honest about this book; it felt like the author had a great beginning of a novel and then couldn’t figure out how to explain all her wonderful mysteries and so just decided to pick the likeliest outcomes. If I hadn’t read it that way, this book would probably have been a ‘four’ because the prose were great. Fast moving, a tiny bit flowery and somewhat descriptive.

I love my books to be uplifting, and Mara’s story really wasn’t - maybe that’s being saved up for the sequel (men Now I’m going to be honest about this book; it felt like the author had a great beginning of a novel and then couldn’t figure out how to explain all her wonderful mysteries and so just decided to pick the likeliest outcomes. I love my books to be uplifting, and Mara’s story really wasn’t - maybe that’s being saved up for the sequel (mentioned in the author’s ‘acknowledgements’ and by the ‘oh-my-gosh!’ ending). Mara’s life is plagued by nightmares, hallucinations and dead people - do not think Meg Cabot’s Mediator series... this book is nothing like it. Do not be fooled by the publisher’s synopsis! Although there were some lively character interactions and descriptions (I thought her youngest brother was a hoot early in the book) that couldn't make this book a ‘happy’ book.

As for being scary... I might have found this book a little more engrossing if any of the scary plot elements (apart from Mara’s initial trauma aka the asylum plot) had been build up more. As it was these moments appeared whenever, wherever - I didn’t expect them, so I couldn’t really dread them. Also, when the cool action stuff happened I was wondering: is Mara dreaming again? So I didn’t find them that scary.

Noah was a pretty cool HEA. He is supposedly British, ultra rich, protective and a tiny, tiny bit shady. Although, the ‘Noah’ element wasn’t enough to save this book for me: there was too much wandering in the plot, and not enough was resolved at its conclusion. (The Joseph storyline I found the most tenuous of all.)

Possibly this book could have been more neatly reviewed and edited; it took me until half way through the book to learn that her new best friend was Jewish. The character stated it in a thought like she’d know all along... I hadn’t known. That sort of annoyed me.

Please remember this is just my review, there will be thousands of others out there and I did think the prose were good (and very teenage!) - this just might be the book for you. :) ...more

Well, i finally finished this book it took me longer to finish it than isla but ofcourse i can't compare these two books.
Anyway, to start off...i really enjoyed the story! the writing style is really different and the characters were likable, i REALLY loved Jamie, he was such a nice character and i wish i could have a friend like him actually! but to be honest, this book really made me confused..i still don't know what's going on. I've already started the second book, i just finished ...more

I was confused and intrigued the entire time I was reading, but I think that was the point. There are so many scenes that I wasn't sure were real, I had to keep reading to find out.
Mara Dyer was a very interesting character, I loved her and hated her at the same time. I also really enjoyed reading about Noah, the love interest.
This book was definitely not what I was expecting, I am really glad I read it and am looking forward to the next installment. ...more

Finally another book I just could not put down. Loved the creepiness of this book. Kept you guessing and at the edge of your seat. The end leaves you with wanting to continue the series. Also has some romance in it too.
