This past saturday I read See you At Harry’s by Jo Knowles. I noticed some buzz about this book over on twitter and requested to review it on NetGalley. I was not disappointed. I started Saturday morning and finished it this evening. Before dinner.

12-year-old Fern narrates this coming-of-age, contemporary realistic fiction story. She tells readers of her adventures, misadventures, growing pains and life growing up in a family who

I didn't want to read this after I read the words "but when their lives are suddenly turned upside down" and "responsible for the devastating event that wrenches the family apart", but I was quickly drawn into the characters' lives. The writing is so good that even though I didn't want to read about any of this, I left feeling good. I'll be reading all of Knowles's books. ...more

Are you kidding me? How can a book be this touching without being cheesy? Excellent. I appreciated that you couldn't really tell what race/ethnicity most of the characters were. As an only child, I can't really comment on the authenticity of the relationships depicted. Also, the cover threw me off a bit-- I thought this was going to be historical fic, not contemporary.

One other question, do teachers really drink booze from thermoses these days?

2012 seems to be the year of the tear-jerker and this one is no exception. While I liked this story, there were times when the story line felt forced.
Give to kids who clamour for sad books.

Wow!! Just wow! What a powerful book, with so many great messages, it's hard to wrap my head around all of them. Everyone that warned me I needed Kleenex were definitely telling the truth. Love the resolution at the end. ...more

Good female protagonist. Serious sibling death stuff. Interesting if a bit meh on the family dynamic.
