One of THE best kids books I have read. It grabbed me and touched me in a way that few stories have. It is humorous, heart breaking and beauty all at the same time. When I finished reading I wanted to love more and reach out to others in need more. In the end, it is a story about kindness, a story that really makes you think about how we treat others. We are often surprised by cruelty, but isn't it truly fulfilling to also be surprised by kindness?

Everyone should read this, kids and adults!
It is a beautiful story told from shifting perspectives about a fifth grade boy with severe facial abnormalities. I cried a lot reading it (be warned, don't read it in public, I was crying at my daughter's cello lesson in the corner over the book) but not all sad tears - it's a very honest and tender and non-sanctimonious examination of the highs and lows of what human beings are capable of in their interactions with each other.

First let me say that I listened to this book, which gave additional voice to the four or five characters that had points-of-view. At times this was great, at others not-so-great. It gave a different dimension to the character of Auggie - a lightly gravelly tone that seemed to have a teeny, tiny bit feminine edge to it that every so often put me off. August has (and will continue throughout his entire life) to see first hand reactions to a face that is grotesque, different, un-beautiful in a wor

Another five stars from Kirsten? I know, I know, but really this is an outstanding book. Thinking as a librarian, I'm not sure where in the library to put this. It's been in our juvenile fiction, but it definitely has a YA and even an adult component. I understand that there will be another edition released with an "adult" cover to be shelved in the adult section of a bookstore or library. (It's being compared to the broad appeal of Mark Haddon's "The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime

Well written, but sometimes hard to read. Insightful, but not overt. This is the first book of the Golden Sower 2014 nominees my 9 year old daughter and I reading together, and it was moving. We read back and forth to each other, but it took much longer to get through this book. It is a lot to digest. There were a few times when I had to stop and say, "I don't really want to read this next part, I don't want to say these words out loud because they are so awful and distasteful." But of course I

For me, the tone of this book was remarkable. August is 11 and has a severe facial deformity which has required multiple surgeries, home-schooling, and a vast amount of love and support from his parents and older sister. He is about to go to school with other kids for the first time. He is super aware of the effect his appearance has on people. This might sound like a sad story (and it has it's moments), the humor and sensitivity and the authors ability to enable us to feel what the characters a

4.5 stars, rounded up. This book easily lived up to the hype with its heartwarming, and occasionally heartwrenching, story. This is a very likable school story laced with a strong message about being kind.

If you only read one book this year, this should be the one. If you know a 10 year old, or ever were a 10 year old, this book will produce a huge lump in your throat. It will make you reexamine how you treat everyone around you every day. You will instantly relate the characters to people you know. This book will make you become a better person. I hope that it becomes required reading in every middle school!
