I enjoyed the characters a lot - they have depth and we see sweet moments. I think my main issue is that I found it hard to suspend disbelief that this could really happen. This is a realistic story with a bit of a surreal element (including the POV of a whale that feels). I liked the science in this story (acoustic biology, hertz, fixing radios) - Iris' hobbies were different and interesting. Just so, so good. Kelly should be very proud of how many ways the theme echoed throughout every part of the story and how readers can connect with the characters even more deeply as the story advances. I wasn't prepared for how much I'd like this book and am so glad it was on this year's Sequoyah Nominee list (Oklahoma State's Children's-Choice Book Award). So good. ...more

This book from the point of view of a middle school student who is Deaf will add to any middle school classroom library. I'm excited to see more and more books being written that tell great stories with perspectives that the majority of middle school students may not have thought of before. ...more

Beautiful story about a deaf girl and a whale she feels connected with--a whale who can't communicate with other whales because his song is in the wrong key. It gets very unrealistic towards the end, but still worth 4 stars. Grades 4-6 ...more

Love how it represents deaf culture, some of the context seemed unrealistic but the struggles the main character had were really real.
