a colleague asked me a series of questions while we were out drinking the other night, questions like So what's next for you? and Is this all you are planning on doing with your career? and Is your current job how you want to be defined and does that actually give you satisfaction? I found myself annoyed then defensive then offended. what gave her the right to question me, I've accomplished a lot in my job and in my life, yes I am content with my career and why the hell shouldn't I be, blah blah

This might actually be my favorite long form Miles story. Up until now I've always preferred the novellas. I guess that means I prefer Miles away from the Dendarii fleet, solving practical problems and dealing with his own demons while he tries to help others. This book felt like it didn't really pick up its pace til the 200th page, though in fact the early chapters were setting the groundwork. For a while I thought this played a little like a TV clip show, using the memory conceit to remind us

4.5 stars. I am a big fan of this series and this is one of the better installments. Excellent character development (which is tough to continue to do for a character that has already appeared in so m any novels). Highly recommended.

Ok I know there is this whole debate thing going on about the proper reading order of this series. I don't have much to say about that other than, do not read this book until you have several others under your belt. The depth of character and plot is built upon the previous heartaches and successes of these wonderful characters and the richness of this story will be lost if you don't get to know these folks before you read this amazing story

I put off reading this book for months. I had read just enough of a summary to know that it was going somewhere painful that I wasn't at all sure that I wanted to go, and I was very nervous about how it would all turn out, despite my faith in Lois McMaster Bujold's skills as an author. However, I finally resolved to stop being a coward and read it this past week, and as I should have known, it wasn't nearly as painful as I anticipated. In fact, the biggest pain was putting the book down once I h

A little slow to start but it picks up
Miles returns home after a mission gone wrong. Unfortunally he fails to reveal the real reason why the mission goes wrong. Illyan discovers the real reason and Miles is released from Imp Sec and he can't return to the Dendarii. An incident occurs at Imp Sec and Miles wrangles his way back in.
The books started a bit slow, actually it was positively glacial. Eventually it did pick up. My guess is that was the idea, Miles without direction is just not good for ...more
