The Blade Itself will undoubtedly become classic fantasy. I found it engrossing, and one of the best examples of the "darker" epic fantasies, with protagonists lacking in traditional heroic qualities and quests that are less than selfless. I was very impressed by the immersion into the characters and the unconventional choice of the Inquisitor. Everyone grew on me, including him. The setting was beautifully illustrated and I genuinely think that the build-up to an epic battle was smooth as silk. It didn't feel contrived or hacked. It felt inevitable. The hints at great workings of power and magic were truly enticing.

It’s always a pleasure to discover a new author. Of course, if I didn’t take so infernally long to get around to reading books, I would have discovered Abercrombie a few years ago… but after finally getting around to reading his first book, The First Law, I’m delighted that there are already 3 more to read!

In recent years there has been a trend in heroic fantasy toward a certain realism - which, being fantasy, some people find rather odd.
